↑Sam Fuld – OF – TB
I contemplated adding Sam Fuld to last week’s edition of “3 up, 3 Down”, but I wanted to see if this virtually unknown player could continue his hot start. Fuld is on a tear this season and already has 10 stolen bases in 13 attempts. Add that he is hitting .284 and has only 13 Ks in 102 ABs, he is proving to be an effective contact hitter in the lead-off spot for the Rays.
↑Jed Lowrie – 2B, SS – BOS
Since becoming a starter for the Red Sox, Jed Lowrie is making Terry Francona’s decision to keep Marco Scutaro on the bench very easy. Over the last 2 weeks, Lowrie is hitting .302 with 2 homers and 7 RBI. Now that Boston has crawled out of their beginning of the season funk are back to scoring runs, he’ll continue to have opportunities to score runs as well as knock them in.
↑Josh Johnson – SP – FLA
Josh Johnson has proven all of his skeptics, including myself, wrong so far…very wrong. Johnson has only allowed 4 earned runs in his 6 starts and he has a microscopic 0.88 ERA. His .130 BAA is tops in the league and according to Elias Sports Bureau he is the first pitcher in the last 50 years to have 3 starts of at least 5 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball in April or within the first 5 starts of season.
↓Hanley Ramirez – SS – FLA
I am really starting to feel bad for fantasy owners that spent the #1 pick in the draft on Ramirez. He’s hitting only .200 through his first 90 ABs. What’s worse is he only has six extra base hits with a single round tripper. His 3 SBs in 6 attempts are a little disappointing too.
↓Dan Uggla – 2B – ATL
Dan Uggla, Hanley’s former teammate, is not fairing much better than Ramirez in 2011. Uggla is hitting a mere .196 this season with five home runs and only nine RBI. Expected to be the missing offensive link in the Atlanta lineup, Uggla has disappointed this April and he doesn’t appear to be headed out of this slump anytime soon. He is a notoriously slow starter so there is still hope, but this could turn Ugg-Ly.
↓Ubaldo Jimenz – SP -COL
Ubaldo Jimenez 2011 season is beginning like his 2010 season ended and he has already spent 15 days on the DL with a cut on his right thumb. So far, Ubaldo has only made 4 starts and he is 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA. Compared to his 5-0 record and 0.79 ERA after his first 5 starts last year, he seems to have lost his touch. Things may turn around for him as his K/9 is sitting at 9.0, but the downside is he’s given up 11 walks in 20.0 IP.
Buster of the Week – Mike Leake – SP – CIN
The Cincinnati Reds pitcher went all “Winona Rider” at a Macy’s Department store recently and was arrested for stealing $59.88 worth of T-shirts.
DWAG of the Week – Bianca LaRussa (Daughter of Cardinals Manager Tony LaRussa)
We can now add a daughter to our weekly WAG segment as Tony LaRussa’s daughter recently made the Raiderettes Cheer squad. Too bad she has to cheer for such a scum-bag team.
